Local Birding Areas

Pixley Refuge is home to a small marsh and has some of the last significant acres of Valley Grassland habitat. During the winter months, it is the best place in the Southern San Joaquin Valley to view Sandhill Cranes.

Situated on what was once the largest freshwater wetland in the western United States, Kern National Wildlife Refuge provides optimum wintering habitat for migratory waterfowl and wading birds.

The Kern River Preserve is managed by Audubon-California for the preservation of one of California’s finest remaining riparian forests and the wildlife it supports.

A real-time, online checklist program, eBird has revolutionized the way that the birding community reports and accesses information about birds. Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides rich data sources for basic information on bird abundance and distribution at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.

The Hummingbird Society was created in 1996 as a nonprofit organization to help people understand and appreciate hummingbirds and to provide a channel to help save the ones that are endangered.

Educational Resources

People of virtually any age can participate in the hobby of bird-watching. This site is sponsored by HomeAdvisor and some of the links are broken. However, there is still a lot of information available for beginning birders.
